I knew better
"I committed a sin that I knew was wrong, how is Allah going to forgive me?"
No one's perfect, and I am almost sure we can all relate to the above dialogue above. There are a few points I want to state from this:
Number 1 - Limiting Allah is one of the biggest sins you can commit. Number 2 - Seek Forgiveness.
By saying that Allah won't be able to forgive my sin because it's too big, I am limiting the mercy of Allah SWT, which is a major sin in itself. No sin you commit is bigger than God's mercy. Sometimes we do something that we can't even forgive ourselves for, so we don't expect forgiveness from anyone else, let alone God. You and I do not have the mercy that God has, but we must try to practice the mercy that we have been blessed with, even on ourselves.
There are many ways that people learn; some learn from watching others, but a lot of people have to experience it themselves to be able to learn and overcome it. Personally, I'm the latter. It's hard, but when you are able to see a mistake as a blessing, you truly grasp the lesson that is trying to be relayed. Sheikh Mansour Leghaei has a lecture, and he explains how sometimes Allah (SWT) puts us through trials and tribulations to help us learn and grow from our experiences.
“Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Surely those who are too proud to worship me will enter Hell, fully humbled.” (Qur'an 40:60)
Feeling guilty from committing a sin is a wake-up call. It is a call from Allah SWT, calling his creation back to him. It is when we stop feeling that guilt that we have travelled too far down the wrong road (not impossible to do better but requires effort) and need to re-evaluate our life and priorities.
Always seek forgiveness, not only for what you deem a 'big sin,' but also for those small sins we commit every day, like white lies or swearing.
Seek forgiveness from the bottom of your heart, make a plan, put in the effort, and be willing to sacrifice in order to avoid committing the same sin. Even if you do repeat the same mistake, seek forgiveness again and again until you stop.
"Gold is tested with fire, and a believer is tested through trials." - Imam Ali (A.S)
Never give up and use your mistakes as a guide of what not to do, and see your tribulations as a blessing, for God tests the ones he loves.
